Vitamin D 'can lower Cancer Risk'

Researchers have found that vitamin D can reduce the risk of certain types of cancer including, breast, colon, and ovarian amongst others. Those with darker skin produce less vitamin D naturally and may need longer exposure to the sun while those with fair skin may need to avoid exposure all together because of other risks. Vitamin D can also be obtained through supplements and diet. Vitamin D is found in meat, margine, and oily fish.

Product Review: Neutrogena Instant Bronze Foam

This sunless tanner from Neutrogena "Instant Bronze sunless Tanner and Bronzer in One, Medium" gets a thumbs down for application and clean up!

The brown foam is like applying war paint! The dark bronzer does allow you to see places you may have missed but don't accidentally touch anything or it will be stained. It left my palms stain even after washing with soap and water. It also left me feeling sticky.

At Tanning News we have decided to add periodic product reviews. Please let us know what products would be of interest. Look for reviews of sunless products, sunscreens, bronzers, moisturizers, even tanning beds and tanning salons in the future! Feel free to add your own comments!

Question:
How would you rate this sunless tanning product? How does it compare to other products you have tried?

Tanning Maybe Addictive for Some

Tanning may give some people a "buzz" similiar to a runners high. Researchers from the University of Texas at Galveston asked beach goers a series of questions that were modifed from drug and alcohol evalutions. Some of the questions were:

1. Do you spend more time in the sun than planned?

2. Do you feel guilty for tanning too long?

3. Do you skip other social activities to go to the beach or tanning salon?

The result of the survey were published in the journal Archives of Dermatology.

Although previous research has shown that ultra violet light from a tanning bed or the sun releases endorphins which can reduce pain and improve a person's mood. Some argue that the driving force behind tanning is the association most people have between a tan and health and beauty.

Note:
Always follow recommended guidelines for exposure times and do not exceed maximums. Never tan more than once in 24 hours or allow clients to. Your tan continues to develop over this time period and additional exposure could have undesirable results like burning.

Vitamin D May Prevent Cancer

At least one scientist argues for the benefits of tanning, Dr. Edward Giovannucci, a Harvard University professor of medicine and nutrition, recently presented a lecture for the American Association of Cancer Research. His research suggests that vitamin D may prevent 30 deaths for each one caused by skin cancer.

Dr. Giovannucci's presentation impressed the American Cancer Society's chief Epidemiologist, Dr. Michael Thun who is now reviewing the society's tanning guidelines. "There is now intriguing evidence that vitamin D may have a role in the prevention as well as the treatment of certain cancers," Thun said.

The human body can absorb vitamin D from a variety of sources that occur naturally like salmon, tuna, and the sun. Vitamin D is also routinely added to milk and available in supplements like vitamins. The government has not agreed on a RDA, or recommended daily allowance.

Both Dr. Holick and Dr. Thun don't want people to overdo their sun exposure. Dr. Holick encourages common sense and he points our that skin cancer is rarely fatal.

The most deadly form, melanoma, accounts for only 7,770 of the 570,280 cancer deaths expected to occur in the United States this year. There is no scientific evidence that moderate sun exposure causes Melanoma, Holick contends. There are more than 1 million milder forms of skin cancer that are tied to chronic or prolonged suntanning.

Dr. Holick has been attacked by the Sun Safety Alliance, which is funded in part by Coppertone and drug store chains. For publishing is book
A dozen major studies are under way to test vitamin D's ability to prevent cancer particularly prostate and lung cancer. A the belief that no sun exposure is good is beinging to fade, but until further research is conducted most dermatologist still suggest moderation.
